Bengali HSC students who attended the reception at Campbelltown City Council

On the 2^nd of March 2005 Campbelltown City Council General Manager Paul Tosi and Mayor organised a student reception for those students who achieved exceptional marks from the Campbelltown district high schools and colleges and as well the Bangladeshi community HSC students. There were many invited high officials and the Bangladesh Welfare Society Campbelltown (BWSC) executive. BWSC take initiative from 2005 to give a reception all of Bangladeshi HSC students who are living in NSW and the students who got accepted into OC and selective high schools. Mayor Banfield also participates with BWSC for the student reception. BWSC give thanks to Campbelltown City Council. Regarding the above matter BWSC need help from the community.

A Noble Deed Done by Probasy for a Worthy Cause

These pictures are of Mohram, a twenty year old man who lives in Jharshinhershon Gram, Purbochatnai Upozela, Dimla Union, Nilfamari  Jela, Bangladesh. He was born with a disability that is with short legs and arms. He is training to become a hafeez. He is very poor and to survive he tutors young children around his area, he teaches them how to read the Quran. To get to his students he has to take a bike ride, usually he asks someone on the streets to give him a ride. However, he had to pay for the rides. By the end of each month, minus all his expenses he would only have 30 taka left.
In October 2004, when Bangladesh was hit by devastating floods, Probasy decided to raise money for the flood affected by selling Cadbury chocolates. When Kushbu and his dad (Abdul Aziz) went to Nilfamari they discovered this man and decided to make him a customised bike which he could ride and save money. So along with the cows, vans, etc. that they gave to the flood affected, they also left some money back home for his bike. And Prothom Alo have sent them these pictures. Probasy encourages others to do activities such as this one.

Reza Kibria Demands Justice for the Death of His Father

The All Party Action Committee met on the 6^th March, 2005 with Reza Kibria (son of S.A.M.S. Kibria) at Parramatta MRC. Bengali communities came along and listened to his speech on the details of his father's death and the current state of Bangladesh and its government. Many local communities took part in the discussion and delivered enlightening speeches suggesting ways in which people can help the situation.

The Passing Away of the Famous Singer, Lyricist, Composer and Language Movement Activist, Abdul Latif

Abdul Latif passed away (inna lilla... rajeun)  on Saturday, 26^th of February at 2:00 pm, Sydney Time at the age of 82. We pray for his departed soul.

    Abdul Latif father of Rabindra Sangeet shilpi Sirajus Salekin, was born in 1927 in Barishal District. He learnt music from many noted musicians from India and Bangladesh since he left school. He went to Kolkata to learn Hindustani Classical music in 1944. He took part in World War II where he was sent to Burma and came back to Dhaka after 1947.

            Abdul Latif joined Radio Pakistan as a performer in 1948 and gradually became a music director. He worked for Radio Bangladesh till 1974 and later he became the Deputy Director of Mass Communications Department under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. He retired from this job in 1989 and he has been involved in teaching music since 1948.

            Abdul Latif is a renowned performer, lyricist and composer of Bangladesh. He has composed many folk, modern and patriotic songs which are still very popular. His songs inspired the nation during our language movement in 1952 and liberation war in 1971. He received ‘Ekushe Padak’ and 'Shadhinata Padak' – the highest civilian awards for his overall contribution in the cultural field.  He also received other awards for his contribution in the musical arena.

Saturday School of Community Language (SSCL) will commence running Bangla course from 1^st term of 2006 for year 7 - 10 students at Dulwich Hill centre of NSW.

 Ekushe Academy Celebrated 21^st February at Ashfield Park, Sydney. There were many book and food stalls. The program was opened by the Bangladesh High Commissioner, Ashraf-Ud-Doula. The program included the presentation of various cultural organisations, ekushe discussions, a book fair, prize distributions and a raffle draw.
